What’s the Best Way to Clean My Blinds?

You make sure your windows are sparkly clean, but what about the blinds or shades that cover them?  They block out the light, help keep your rooms cool, and provide privacy.  Unfortunately, they also collect dust, pet hair, and other dirt.

Whether they’re vinyl, wood, fabric, or aluminum, window blinds need cleaning, too!

Here are some tips to make cleaning your blinds more efficient and easier:

Prep

Start by gathering up cleaning supplies.  Here’s what you’ll need: vacuum cleaner with soft brush attachment, microfiber cloths, dishwashing liquid, baking soda, warm water, and a plastic dish.

Close the blinds – wood and faux-wood blinds can be completely closed.  If you have vinyl and aluminum blinds, the slats (which often overlap), should only be tilted downward and not completely closed.

Dust

To dust vertical blinds, hold the bottom of the blind in one hand to stabilize it, wipe with a microfiber cloth, starting from the top and in a downward motion.  Or, use your vacuum cleaner with a soft dusting brush attachment and a low-suction setting.

If you have horizontal blinds, work from the top slat and wipe from side to side.

After dusting one side, flip the blinds so the other side is facing you and repeat the process with your microfiber cloth or vacuum.

Clean

If dusting doesn’t feel clean enough, or your blinds are heavily soiled, use a microfiber cloth dampened with warm water to thoroughly clean your blinds.  If you have wooden blinds, make sure they don’t get too wet.

After you wipe your blinds with a damp cloth, open them and let them air-dry.  Make sure to vacuum any remaining dust that fell onto the windowsill, nearby furniture, or the floor while you were dusting.

If your vinyl or aluminum blinds are in the kitchen or another area where they get exposed to grease, or stubborn dust, dirt, or residue, it’s best to take them off the window and place them in a bathtub with warm water.  Add a few generous squirts of dish soap and a cup of baking soda, and let the blinds soak for about an hour.   Rinse with warm water and wipe away any excess dirt or dust.

If your blinds are still looking discolored and yellowed, the stains are probably due to sun exposer.  Soak the blinds into the tub with cold water and 3 cups of liquid bleach for no more than 10 minutes and then rinse thoroughly and dry off.

Maintenance

Clean your blinds regularly, ideally once a month, so they don’t get too dusty or dirty. Clean blinds can make an entire room feel fresh and clean, plus – well taken care of blinds can last for many years, even decades.
